Lewes Historical Society Craft Fair, Oct. 3rd & 4th Coast Day Goes Virtual, Oct. 4th To share the latest coastal science while protecting our com- munity during the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be hosting Coast Day 2020 as a virtual event. Some of your annual fa- vorites will transition online fairly easily, such as Focus on the Coast lectures. Others will continue in a modified way. Seafood cooking demonstrations, for instance, may turn into prerecorded videos demonstrating a recipe followed by a question-and-answer session on Coast Day. There will be opportunities to engage with presenters and fellow Coast Day fans over social media and possibly activi- ties to do at home. And a new online format will bring new opportunities as well, from new ways to find what you want to the potential to reach more people from more places. This website will provide details on the day as they are fi- nalized, so keep checking back. And save the date for virtual Coast Day 2020 on October 4! www.deseagrant.org/coast- day Dozens of artists will be showcasing their skills at the Lewes His- torical Society’s Annual Fall Craft Fair on Saturday, October 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, October 4th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Local Delmarva artists and crafters will join others from sur- rounding states over the weekend to exhibit at the LHS main cam- pus located at 110 Shipcarpenter Street. This annual show offers a range of unique creations including wood turning, carved decoys, hand spun garments, driftwood art, ceramics, and an assortment of jewelry designs in glass, copper, silver and more. The Lewes Beekeeping Club will join the fair-goers on the LHS campus on Saturday only and display a live hive outside LHS’s co- lonial era Rabbit’s Ferry House. Beekeepers and their bees will be demonstrating throughout the day. Attendees will learn how honey has served as both a science and a craft from colonial times. Honey, part of a fragile ecosystem, is thought of as an important ingredi- ent, preservative, and medication. Although honey will not be sold at the fair, due to restrictions, packets of pollinator friendly flower seeds will be given away for free while supplies last, to help the local bee population. The Fall Craft Fair is sponsored by Schell Brothers. Admission is $5 and free for children under 12. Food and music will be available throughout the event. Proceeds from this event will benefit educa- tional and preservation programs at the Lewes Historical Society. All buildings on LHS Campus will be closed during the fair, due to current restrictions, however the Lewes History Museum located in the Margaret H. Rollins Community Center at 101 Adams Avenue will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with the historic Cannonball House which currently houses the “Breaking Britannia’s Grasp” exhibition. For more information contact the Lewes Historical Society at 645-7670 or visit historiclewes.org. The Lewes Merchants’ Fall Sidewalk Sales will also be taking place over the weekend of Oct. 2nd-4th throughout the Historic Lewes Commercial District from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Visit www.Lew- esChamber.com for info.October 2020 SouthernDelawareExplorer.com Page 11 “The Only Real Estate Company You Will Ever Need” 418 E. Did you know that Indian River Bay is actually a drowned river valley or that Seaford is the birthplace of DuPont Nylon? Did you know Harriet Tubman escorted a slave named Tilly to freedom through Southern Delaware? How about that the now $90 billion broiler chicken industry start- ed right here in a little house in Ocean View? Or that Rehoboth Beach was originally settled as a Methodist camp meeting? Did you know that Southern Delaware is now home to a rock that fell from the sky several years and thousands of miles from the volcanic eruption that sent it into orbit? When you explore Southern Delaware’s history, you’ll be in great company! Centuries ago Captain John Smith himself explored tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay and met the Nanticoke Indian tribe near what’s now the historic town of Laurel. The history that’s unfolded in the centuries since has been documented and preserved, drawing the attention of visitors and history buffs with fascinating sites and splendid stories. In Southern Delaware, you’ll find Native American History, Ag- ricultural History, Maritime & Military History, Natural Histo- ry, Industrial History, Architectural History, Social History, Avia- tion History, and Railroad History. We have charming seaside and riverside towns each with their own fascinating stories, including some stories that you might not want to listen to after dark. We have war stories and stories of political intrigue. We have pirates and shipwrecks and tales of buried booty. We have historic shipbuild- ing villages, picturesque farming communities, and quintessential beach towns. Fall For Our History this September, October, and November and make Southern Delaware’s fascinating history part of your story!
